SIGNING #2 - SAT MAY 11 COLLECTOR’S PARADISE VALLEY STORE
And on Saturday, May 11th, from 12-3, I’ll be signing at Collector’s Paradise original store in Winnetka, CA.
Since both signings will be during FREE COMIC BOOK DAY month, I’ll have free issues of some of my books in addition to copies of my trade to sign.
And here’s the press release for the GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES trade:
From Alexander the Great’s Macedonian army to Genghis Khan’s Mongol horde to the British Imperial machine of the nineteenth to the Soviet Union to the twenty-first century United States of America, no occupying force has ever been able to control Afghanistan — the very reason it’s known as the Graveyard of Empires. Mark Sable and Paul Azaceta drew upon that history in their Image Comics series GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES, set in present-day Afghanistan, where American troops are caught in a seemingly unending conflict with the Taliban. That is, until a new enemy enters the field: the undead. The only way to defeat them is for the Americans and Taliban to unite forces, and as former enemies become uneasy allies, tension will rise on all sides.
All four issues of the critically acclaimed, controversial GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES will be collected into a new trade paperback, set to be in stores on May 1.
“Zombies are the perfect metaphor for modern insurgents,” said writer Sable. “A seemingly endless foe with inscrutable motives that comes in unstoppable waves. In counter-insurgency theory, there’s something we came across in our research called ‘insurgent math.’ It’s the idea that by killing one terrorist, you can create ten more because you’ve inspired their friends and family. Similarly, in a world where the dead are coming back to life, anyone you kill can return to infect your comrades and turn them against you.”
“It was a challenge to do the book because I wanted to get it right,” said artist Azaceta. “Not just the uniforms and the guns but Afghan culture and its wonderful landscape. While digging around for reference the things that surprised me most was the beauty of the country.”
Part of the research was aided by photojournalist Tim Hetherington, who co-directed the Academy Award-nominated documentary Restrepo and who was killed in a mortar attack in Mistrata in 2011 by Libyan government forces while covering the Libyan civil war. Sable and Azaceta dedicated GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES to his memory.
Meticulously detailed and boldly drawn, GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES can be pre-ordered now (Diamond Comics code MAR130502, ISBN 978-1-60706-739-9). A 128-page full-color graphic novel, its retail price $14.99. The first issue is available digitally for free from comiXology and the Image Comics iOS app.
Already bought a copy of Sam Humphries sold-out-from-the-distributor SACRIFICE, but going to try and stop by Collector’s Paradise in Pasadena for this signing tonight. Like their Canoga park location, an extremely well run store where I did a Free Comic Book Day signing this year, it should be fun.
Whether or not I can make it, you should come by (for the free beer if nothing else) and pick up SACRIFICE, which I can’t recommend more highly.
This Wednesday, December 14th, aka SACRIFICE day, Collector’s Paradise is hosting the official SACRIFICE launch party!
I’ll be signing the comic book at both of their Los Angeles-area locations, from 12n-3p at the Canoga Park store in the Valley, and from 7p-10p at the Pasadena store.
The Pasadena party will feature FREE BEER which you can’t hate on.
Come on over and say hi! I’ll be the guy with the afro and about six sharpies. Details and RSVP here!

This Saturday & Sunday
WE PAY YOUR SALES TAX
Today, July 1, Los Angeles County Sales Tax goes down from 9.75% to 8.75%. To celebrate this awesome occasion, we are paying ALL YOUR SALES TAX at BOTH Canoga Park and Pasadena Stores this weekend. If you have Subscription books stacking up, or if there is a large size purchase on your mind, this weekend is the BEST time to do it. In addition to the awesome savings, we have an AMAZING comic book writer, Mark Sable, in both stores throughout the day on Saturday, to promote release of his awesome Image Comics series, GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES. Click on the links below to see reviews of the first issue of the book.
ComicBuzz review HERE said: “I will waste no time in telling you that in Mark Sable’s few short years writing comics, he has topped all that came before by writing one of 2011’s best single issues from anyone.”
Broken Frontier review HERE said this: “Graveyard of Empires takes a cue from fellow Image creator Robert Kirkman’s massively successful franchise, The Walking Dead, using a character-driven approach over the typical shock-and-awe tactics of most zombie fiction…Sable shows maturity and restraint, allowing himself and collaborator Paul Azaceta ample time to introduce their gritty, realistic setting and characters, before revealing the true conflict at the heart of their horror story.”
We’ll have a TON of other books by Mark in stock for you to check out but you MUST Make sure to stop by early to get your copy of Graveyard of Empires #1 as we have a very limited amount of copies available due to the fact that we’ve been selling it like HOT CAKES. Mark’s been out of town, so this is the first chance we have had to do this, and you DON’T HAVE TO PAY SALES TAX!!!!

This Saturday, May 7th, from 11AM-2PM, I will be doing a free Comic Book day signing at the grand opening of the new Collector’s Paradise in Pasadena.
In addition to signing anything I’ve ever written (including hard to find copies of the currently sold-out RIFT RAIDERS), I will be giving out FREE limited edition FCBD preview issues of GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES. They have the 1st 16 pages of the story in it, so much more than has been shown in the press (don’t worry, there are still 16 MORE pages of story in the 1st issue)
There are a lot of great comic stores in LA - Meltdown and Golden Apple being two I frequent. Collector’s Paradise may not be as well known but is just as well run. The fact that owner Ed Greenberg is opening a 2nd store in Pasadena in this economy is a testament to that. The Winnetka Store is extremely kid-friendly (while still having anything a hard-core adult fan needs) and I expect the new store to be the same.
If I’m not enough of a draw, there’s also going to be signings by:
Len Wein, legendary creator of such characters as Wolverine, Swamp Thing, Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus.
JT Krul of Green Arrow and Teen Titans, fame
David Petersen – creator /artist / writer of the amazing All Ages book, Mouse Guard.
Jim McCann creator of The Return of the Dapper Men, from Archaia,
Top Cow’s Sheldon Mitchell and Rick Basaldua, Frank Forte of Asylum Press, and rising star Tess Fowler.
Plus sales, and of course, loads of free comic books.
You can click the link to the Facebook page for details, but here’s the address. Hope to see you all there:Collector’s Paradise PASADENA319 S. Arroyo Parkway Unit 4Pasadena, CA
