I’m pretty bummed out that I couldn’t make it to Wonder Con this past weekend, as it would have been a great opportunity to promote GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES. It’s always tough to manage promotion vs. actual writing and while I envy those who can do it better than me, the work has to come first.
Besides working on a script for GRAVEYARD, I was also working another of my upcoming projects which I’m pretty enthuses about..
It’s called DECOY and will be coming out later this year from Kickstart Comics, publishers of RIFT RAIDERS. I can’t give away too much yet, other than to say it’s a mix of sci-fi and espionage and a story I’ve been looking to do for a while.
What’s most exciting, however, is the artist. Andy MacDonald is someone I’ve know forever. Here’s some character sketches he did.

And here’s a preview page:

Andy’s might be best known for hist work on Terminator with Zack Whedon (brother of Joss and writer on AMC’s dearly departed Rubicon).

I’ve been dying to work with Andy ever since he co-created Image’s groundbreaking series NYC Mech long with my friends Ivan Brandon and Miles Gunter.

Two volumes are available in TPB, along with two volumes of 24/7 anthologies, inspired by Andy’s visionary robot designs and edited by Ivan. I had a story in the 24/7 Volume 2, illustrated by the Amazing Buzzard’s Dan Hipp:

Aside from the sound effects, it was a completely silent story, no dialogue. I wrote it Marvel style, let Dan run with it…and I think it holds up surprisingly well given how early in my career I wrote it. Maybe I’ll share more of it in the future, but I digress.
It was incredibly fortuitous that Andy was available for DECOY, and incredibly flattering that he agreed to work with me. I was hesitant to ask him, not only because of his rising popularity, but because he’s drawn so many robots I thought he might be sick of them.
Thankfully, either I was wrong or Andy was desperate. More on DECOY - and other upcoming non-GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES projects - soon.
